Visitors to New Orleans often ask about “What’s on the other side of the river?” most of the time your answer is “not much” but “take the ferry just to see the river”.

This statement is completely inaccurate! Just minutes across the river is New Orleans’ second oldest neighborhood, Algiers. When you get off the ferry, you will land in the Algiers Point Historic District. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

There are a number of great attractions at Algiers Point and we hope you’ll take the time to see all of them when you’re here.

1. The Algiers-Canal Street ferry (1 Morgan St.)

The Algiers-Canal Street ferry has been in continuous operation since 1827, making it one of the oldest operating ferry routes in North America. Enjoy the best views of the city skyline and the Mississippi River from the short ferry ride.

2. Algiers Point Courthouse (225 Morgan St.)

The Algiers Point Courthouse was established in 1896 after the Great Algiers Fire of 1895. Learn all about the fire and the Duverje Plantation, which previously stood on the site of the courthouse. This was the home of the “First Family” of Algiers!

3. Historic Architecture (200 block of Olivier St.)

Take a walk back in time while exploring a wide range of architectural styles that are present in this picturesque neighborhood. See classic examples of the Greek, Italian, Eastlake, Queen Anne, and Creole Cottages revival.

4. Dennis Hubbell Citation Library (725 Pelican Ave.)

Stop by one of the four remaining Carnegie Grant buildings left in the city of New Orleans. This quaint little library has a rich history that began with its opening in 1907, Mrs. Cita Dennis Hubbell’s struggle to reopen it in the 1970s until closing by Hurricane Katrina and triumphant reopening in July 2013.

5. Vallette Home and Honor Bark Oak Tree (705 Pelican Ave.)

Visit the former home of Algiers shipbuilder and Captain Francois Vallette, the two-story Greek Revival house is now a private residence. Feel free to walk the original French sidewalk (sidewalk) and enjoy the majestic beauty of the ancient Honor Bark Oak Tree, Algiers Point’s oldest tree.

6. Local pubs, bars and restaurants

No visit to Old Algiers is complete without a stop at one of our charming local establishments. Stop at the most authentic English pub on this side of the pond and have a pint at the Crown and Anchor Pub (200 Pelican Ave.) Or visit Vine n Dine, a locally owned and operated wine bar and bistro just steps from the Ferry Pier (141 Delaronde St.) Enjoy nightly live music and entertainment at the historic Old Point Bar, home to many Hollywood productions. 7. Art galleries and craft shops

As you stroll through Old Algiers, take some time to stop at one of our art galleries or local handicraft shops. NOLA Potter is a craft store representing over 50 local artists from Algiers and Louisiana, the store is located in the former home of John Lafitte’s grocery store. (240 Pelican Ave.) Rosetree Blown Glass Studio and Gallery is home to a working glass studio, watch the artists at work every day! The studio is located in the old Algy movie theater and has an amazing art deco facade. (446 Valletta St.)
