Located on the main stream of the Rio Grand River, in Zapata and Starr counties, approximately 40 miles from Laredo Texas on Highway 83.

The area is 83,654 acres, with a maximum depth of 110 feet. The pool level is 301.2 feet above sea level, with a huge annual fluctuation of 40 to 50 feet or more. The condition of the lake water is usually stained.

Known for its excellent bass fishing, anglers love to fish Falcon Lake. In addition to excellent bass fishing, there are plenty of catfish, making it the perfect fishing trip for the whole family.

The best species to fish are sea bass and catfish, however crappie fishing is poor due to the low water level.

Lake Falcon is a mainstream reservoir on the Grand River between Texas and Mexico. The water is shallow with gradually sloping banks. When the lake is low, the piles of wood and rocks are the only cover for the fish and, at the pool level, the vegetation along the shore provides the best cover. Hydrilla grass is in short supply at this time due to the low levels of the lake.

For active fish, spinning baits and crank baits are the choice of most anglers. A variety of watermelon green plastic worms, handled from Texas and Carolina, do best in this lake. Early morning is an anglers dream, use top water baits like poppers, prop baits and fins. Fishing can be difficult during the hottest summer months, so try a buzz bait in the early morning and late afternoon for surface water.
