Spring Home Inspection and Maintenance

Many of us take pride in our home, but during the winter months, our home can take a serious beating. The long winters in the northern states can be hard on the exterior of the home, and the weather makes it difficult for us to keep up with projects as they become available. That’s why it’s a good idea to set aside a weekend or two in the spring to make sure your home is up to date. Here are some tips that can help you in this type of maintenance work so you can enjoy the summer in a well-maintained house.

One of the first things to check in the spring is the gutters in the house. If you live in an area that has ice or snow, this can easily impact gutters and cause leaks. If gutters don’t drain properly, this can end up drawing water into the house under the roof or perhaps even through the walls into living space. Make sure gutters are clear of debris and well-maintained in the spring. You should also make sure that any area where it drains outside the house is clear of obstructions so water can escape from the foundation.

You may also have to do yard work in the spring. Many of us tend to enjoy doing this work on our own, but for larger projects, you may want to consider hiring some landscapers. They can help you get the situation under control so you can take care of maintenance work much more easily. One thing to watch out for in particular is any low-lying areas that could lead to flooding during the summer. This is especially the case around the foundation of the house where water can end up entering the basement or basement.

A roof exam is always a good idea, especially after a harsh winter. A visual inspection of the roof is usually all that will be necessary and can be done from ground level. If you see that the shingles are cracked or damaged, you’ll need to take a closer look. Keep in mind that working on the roof is dangerous and also expensive. If you’re going to have some sort of roofing job that’s needed, start setting aside some money in your family budget to take care of it as soon as possible.

Those are just a few of the things that need to be done each spring when the snow and ice falls. You should do a full walk around the house and inspect any visible damage that has occurred as well. Making updates to your home during this time and repairing any damage will help save money and time for the future if the problem is allowed to fester.
