How to Order Food in French – Be Like a Local
When I first moved to Montreal, my mailbox was frequently filled with flyers for various restaurants and delivery options. I felt like I got quite a few more of these living in Montreal than I had previously gotten living elsewhere. But in those early days I was genuinely afraid to call those places because there was no guarantee the person on the phone would speak English, and I had no idea how to phrase my delivery requests in French. Over time of course this changed and I learned to order food in French, with a stutter and eventually fluent speech I figured it out. Below is my guide on how to order food in French with ease. Bon Appetite!
Orders by phone:
“Hello I want to order delivery” = Hello, I would like to order delivery.
“I want to have a pizza all dressed in coke, please.” – I want to order a whole pizza with coke please.
“What are your specials?” – What are your specials?
Words to use:
delivery = delivery
I want to drinke= I want to drink
I do not want = I don’t want
with = with
When ordering use the phrases above and then read the menu to fill in the blanks. so when you say “I want to drink” add an item on the menu to complete the prize. so: “Yes, ma’am, I want to have + a salad with smoked salmon, please.” If you don’t know how to say something and want help, say: “How do you say it in French.” = How do you say ______________ in French?
