Wizards, vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural beings are the most popular themes in movies today. Best-selling books and top-grossing movies like Twilight and the Harry Potter series are some examples of this. Magical characters added to the power of advanced technology make this type of movie a real treat for younger audiences.

For several decades, Disney has been waving its magic wand, creating fantasy and bringing it to life on the big screen and on television. Disney was known for offering the best fantasy film. Adding to the long list is the upcoming Wizards of Waverly Place the Movie. This TV movie (made-for-television movie) is an adaptation of the hit Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place or simply known to its tween and teen audiences as WOWP.

Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie is about the adventure of the Russo family when they went on vacation to the Caribbean resort where Mr. and Mrs. Russo put up. The adventure (or misadventure) begins when Alex is upset that she has to go with the family on a trip to the Caribbean. Alex casts a spell that reverses her parents’ momentous first meeting, the spell having cast doubt on the very existence of the Russo family. The only solution to reverse the spell is to find the almighty “Stone of Dreams”. To find the Dreamstone, Alex and Justin set out into the jungle. Meanwhile, Max remains in the presence of his feuding parents struggling to find a way to make his parents fall in love again.

The film will star the same cast as the Wizards of Waverly Place television series. Alexandra “Alex” Russo (played by Selena Gomez), is the middle child and the only girl in the family. Alex is characterized as being brave, sarcastic, a lover of fashion, cunning and quite mischievous. Justin Vincenzo Pepe Russo or Justin (David Henrie), is the oldest of the Russo brothers.

He is smart, mature, and responsible, but his younger sister, Alex, always annoys him. He knows a lot about magic and it is predicted that he will become a powerful magician. Max Russo (Jake T. Austin), Max is the youngest of the family. He always finds himself doing unpredictable things and occasionally getting into trouble. However, he can be trusted to come up with unorthodox solutions to the unusual problems a young wizard may face. Jerry Russo (David DeLuise), is the father of Justin, Alex and Max. He runs the family’s sandwich shop and trains the Russo children in magic. When he was young, he was also a magician.

Jerry won the right to keep his powers by defeating his brother in the wizard duel, but when he found out that wizards can’t marry non-wizards, he gave up his powers to his brother to marry Theresa. Theresa Russo (Maria Canals Barrera), is the mother of Justin, Alex and Max. She is not a magician but she knows about the magical world. She helps run the sandwich shop and is very motherly, often treating her children like six-year-olds, much to her disapproval. She doesn’t like magic either, and has expressed it many times. Harper Finkle (Jennifer Stone), is Alex’s best friend. She is hyperactive and optimistic. She has a huge crush on Alex’s older brother, Justin. Alex and Harper do a lot of things together.

Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie was written by Dan Berendsen, he is the same person who wrote Hannah Montana: The Movie and the upcoming Jonas Brothers film Camp Rock 2. WOWP The Movie is directed by Lev L. Spiro, the same man who brought brilliance to the hit television series Ugly Betty and Minutemen. WOWP The Movie is scheduled to premiere on August 28, 2009 on Disney Channel. The WOWP soundtrack will also be released in August this year.
