American artist Cindy Sherman was born in 1954 in Glenn Ridge, New Jersey, USA. Unlike conventional artists who dabble in many works of art before claiming international fame, Sherman used a highly unusual technique. She acted as a role model and projected herself in a way that sent a strong message about the role of women in society. Cindy’s artworks, especially films and concept portraits, forced and continue to force people to pay attention to them.

She graduated from State University College, Buffalo, New York in 1976. This was also the time Cindy started her paintings. Soon disappointed by the creative limits of painting, she turned to photography.

Cindy Sherman began her career in fine art photography with the “Untitled Film Stills” series. The series consisted of Cindy Sherman’s photographs, where she posed as a B-movie actress, paying close attention to every detail. She is seen in the series in various roles such as prostitute, housewife, dancer, and actor. Cindy began the project, the “Untitled Film Stills” series, consisting of 69 black and white photographs, in 1977 and successfully completed it in 1980. In 1981, Artforum, a renowned magazine, asked her to work on their page central. For this contract she made a series of images, where she is seen crouching on the ground in a prayer position. The magazine’s editor, Ingrid Sischy, rejected these photographs, for fear of being misunderstood.

Subsequently, Cindy began her work on the series “Disaster and Fairy Tale”. This series reflected a complete change in Cindy’s art style for the first time, as she was not the model in any of the images of her. What set the series apart was the rebellious nature of this work where the images had a graphic and gory depiction of vomiting and body parts. “Historical Portraits (1988-90)” was another famous work of Cindy. Here, Sherman is seen back in his old style of self-playing the model once again. She used prosthetic parts of her own body to project herself as various characters from famous paintings. The year 1989 saw the highly controversial and highly regarded Cindy’s “Sex Series”.

Cindy Sherman’s work also extends to the world of cinema. Her directorial debut was in the movie “Office Killer” starring Jeanne Tripplehorn. In the 1998 John Waters comedy “Pecker”, Cindy makes a cameo appearance.
