Discover Zambia as part of your safari vacation

Zambia is a big country with many different things to see. It’s not quite on the tourist map yet, so you can still go there and experience “the real Africa”. The key element in any itinerary to Zambia is the Victoria Falls and you will want to prioritize visiting it during your safari vacation. The Kololo tribe who lived in the area in the 19th century described it as “Mosi-Oa-Tunya”, which means “the smoke that thunders”. Nothing can prepare you for the stunning waterfall site and the falls are listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. 546 million cubic meters of water fall over the edge every minute. The waterfall is 2 kilometers wide and has a drop of 100 meters. Victoria Falls is facing a cliff topped by rainforest and you can follow a path along this cliff to see it up close, just be prepared to get soaked! Victoria Falls are part of the Zambezi River, which runs through six countries to the Indian Ocean. Your safari vacation should be planned so that you can take the time to travel along the Zambezi for a while and enjoy wildlife viewing along the riverbanks, as well as perhaps enjoying the excellent fishing available.

Enjoy a traditional festival during your Safari Vacation

Zambia has a number of traditional festivals that take place throughout the year and if you are on your Safari holiday at the same time as one of these you should definitely go and have a look. The Kazanga Ceremony is the oldest traditional festival in Zambia and has been held between June and August for the last 500 years. Another important festival is the Kuomboka Festival, which celebrates King Lozi’s migration from his dry season home in Lealui to his wet season palace in Limulunga. The king wears an elaborate costume and travels down the river with a flotilla of barges. All the festivals have music, dancing and delicious local food and will truly be the highlight of your safari holiday.

Eat and drink during your safari holiday in Zambia

All the big game sights and incredible sites on your luxury safari vacation will leave you with a big appetite at the end of the day and you won’t regret trying the local delicacies. Zambia’s main food is a maize product called nsima which has a consistency similar to mashed potatoes. You roll it into a ball and dip it into stews with your hands. The local stews or condiments are very healthy and full of meats and vegetables, including okra and pumpkin leaves. A meal of nsima and relish will only set you back about $1. You can wash down your meal with the local beer called Mosi or maybe try a corn-based soft drink called maheu. Of course, western food is also widely available for the non-adventurous.
