Mark Messier’s career through hockey jerseys

Regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time in the National Hockey League, Mark Messier has had quite a lucrative career in hockey. He has worn many jerseys in his day, played for three different NHL franchises and played alongside the Great: Wayne Gretzky. Mark Messier has won a total of six Stanley Cup trophies and has picked up a handful of others to fill his trophy case.

Mark Messier is best known for wearing the Edmonton Oilers jersey. While wearing this jersey, Messier was paired with Wayne Gretzky to win five Stanley Cup championships. Images of Messier waking up in the blue, orange and white colors of the Oilers adorn many children’s playing cards, lunch boxes and anything else merchants deem fit to slap a famous face on. The Oilers logo was prominently displayed on his chest, a white circle with a descending orange drop of oil, as he defended his friend Gretzky and conquered every other team.

In 1991, Messier moved from the Oilers to the New York Rangers. He could still wear mostly blue jerseys, but now he would have to have a little more American pride. He won a Stanley Cup in the red, white and blue New York Ranger uniform and stayed with the team for six years. Towards the end of his career with the Rangers, he even had the pleasure of teaming up with his friend Gretzky one more time and, although they didn’t win a championship that year, it was a sight to see.

In 1997, Messier was traded to the Vancouver Canucks. A welcome move perhaps since Messier was born in Edmonton and likely enjoyed being back on Canadian soil after playing for such a patriotic American team. He played with Vancouver until 2000 when he returned to New York to try to resurrect the team.

Unfortunately, it did not help and Messier retired in 2004 without winning any more championships. The man has worn many jerseys in his day, coincidentally all with a blue color scheme, and has achieved what most national athletes only dream of. Today, Messier is part of the “Team Up and Bring Home the Cup” organization. It’s a contest developed by Pepsi that gives Canada’s most die-hard fans the chance to host a party with their favorite team in their hometown. Messier attends wearing an Edmonton Oilers jersey on most occasions.
